Communication infrastructure & special features for longer distances

Fundamentals

From Amperecloud's point of view, it is largely irrelevant how the physical implementation of an Ethernet or RS-485 connection is designed. Tunneling through fibre optic cables is possible as long as the route is terminated identically on both sides with 8P8C connections ("RJ-45" or "LAN port") or RS-485 connections. Converters for fiber optics to RS-485 or RJ-45 are not provided by Amperecloud.

In principle, an Ethernet connection via radio is also possible, but this is not recommended due to the high level of unreliability.

Amperecloud is not responsible for creating a basic communication infrastructure. If this is not provided, the telecontrol technology cannot be commissioned. We will be happy to advise you on the design of your communication infrastructure if it is directly related to the telecontrol technology.

Amperecloud router

Amperecloud provides an LTE router of type Teltonika RUT-240 or 241 together with the Amperecloud Log, which has two network sockets. The log is connected to the socket labeled "LAN", the network connected to the telecontrol system or telecontrol gateway is connected to the socket labeled "WAN". The router can be configured by Amperecloud so that both sockets are assigned either to a single network or, for security or design reasons, to two separate networks. It is possible to set up port forwarding between the networks.

Special features for longer distances

It is sometimes the case that not all locations and devices to be connected have the required cabling (RS-485, Ethernet, etc.) or are sufficiently close to each other. These restrictions can be circumvented in various ways:

  1. By using a second log in master/slave mode
In this case, a second (or more) Amperecloud log (slave) is connected to the first Amperecloud log (master) via Ethernet, to whose RS-485 ports other devices can be connected as usual. Additional logs do not result in any additional costs (subject to deviations and changes).
  2. By using an RS-485/ETH converter
This basically corresponds to the first case and offers the advantage of saving space, among other things.
