      Instructions for Setting Up Communication with SMA-Inverters

      Before you begin configuration, make sure you have thoroughly read and reviewed the following knowledge base pages:

      Suitable for Direct Marketing: Yes

      Suitable for Reactive Power Control: All except Sunny Tripower xx000TL-10

      Sunny Tripower Core 2 (STP110-60)

      • Ethernet: Enter IP, port 502, and Unit ID 3 in the digital twin
      • Note: Login password required
      • Settings on the device:
        • Communication → MODBUS → Activate port 502
        • Device Monitoring → Parameters → Ext. Controls →

          • Set "Activate normalized active power limitation" to 1

          • Set either "Activate fixed power factor control" (cos phi) OR

            "Activation of normalized reactive power limitation" (Q/P) to 1 (depending on grid operator requirements)

      Sunny Tripower Core 1 (STP50-40/41)

      • Ethernet: Enter IP, port 502, and Unit ID 3 in the digital twin
      • RS-485: Optional with communication module
      • Note: Login password and possibly SMA Grid Guard password required
      • Device Parameters:
        • External Communication → Ethernet → Modbus → TCP Server → Enabled: Yes
        • External Communication → Ethernet → Modbus → UDP Server → Enabled: Yes
        • System & Device Control → Inverter → Active Power Control → Mode: External specification
        • System & Device Control → Inverter → Reactive Power Control → Reference for Reactive Power: Maximum active power WMax
        • System & Device Control → Inverter → Reactive Power Control → Method during active power output:
          • Q, external specification or cos phi, external specification depending on grid operator requirements

      Sunny Tripower xx000TL

      • Ethernet: Enter IP, port 502, and Unit ID 3 in the digital twin
      • RS-485: Optional with communication module
      • Configuration only possible locally using Sunny Explorer

      Sunny Central / Sunny Central Up

      • Ethernet: Enter IP, port 502, and Unit ID 3 in the digital twin

      SMA Sunny Boy & Sunny Mini Central

      Suitability

      • Direct Marketing: Yes
      • Reactive Power Control: Yes

      Device Configuration

      • In the digital twin, select connection type "RS485", and enter the used RS485 port under "Port".
      • Device serial number must be entered.
      • The Slave ID can be any value between 1–99, as long as it's unique per RS485 port.
      • Device detection may take some time.

      SMA Sunny Tripower xx000TL

      Suitability

      • Direct Marketing: Yes
      • Reactive Power Control: Yes

      Device Configuration

      • The inverter and data logger must be on the same network.
      • Use the "LAN" port on the included Teltonika RUT router (check the label).
      • It's recommended to assign a static IP address to the inverter (e.g., 192.168.1.10 – 192.168.1.99).

      In the digital twin:

      • Set connection type to "Network", enter the model and IP, set Slave ID = 3, and Port = 502

      Alternatively via RS485 (optional communication module required):

      • Select "RS485" as connection type
      • Enter the RS485 port in the logger
      • Enter the device serial number
      • Set Slave ID between 1–99 (must be unique per port)

      Configuration must be done on the device using Sunny Explorer.

      Login and SMA Grid Guard password may be required.

      For Ethernet communication (recommended):

      • Device Parameters → External Communication → Ethernet → Modbus → TCP Server → Enabled: Yes
      • Device Parameters → External Communication → Ethernet → Modbus → UDP Server → Enabled: Yes

      SMA Sunny Tripower CORE1 (STP50-40/41)

      Suitability

      • Direct Marketing: Yes
      • Reactive Power Control: Yes

      Device Configuration

      • Inverter and logger must be in the same network
      • Use the LAN port on the Teltonika RUT router
      • Set static IP within range: 192.168.1.10 – 192.168.1.99

      In the digital twin:

      • Set connection type: "Network", model, IP
      • Slave ID = 3, Port = 502

      Alternatively via RS485:

      • Select connection type "RS485", enter used RS485 port
      • Device serial number required
      • Slave ID must be unique on that port (1–99)

      Some steps must be configured directly on the device. Login and Grid Guard password may be needed.

      Ethernet Settings (recommended):

      • Modbus TCP Server: Enabled
      • Modbus UDP Server: Enabled

      Universal Settings (regardless of communication method):

      • Active Power Control → Mode: External specification
      • Reactive Power Control → Reference: WMax
      • Reactive Power Control → Method:
        • Q, external specification or cos phi, external specification (depending on grid operator)

      SMA Sunny Tripower CORE2 (STP110-60)

      Suitability

      • Direct Marketing: Yes
      • Reactive Power Control: Yes

      Device Configuration

      • Same network requirement as above
      • Use LAN port on the Teltonika RUT
      • Static IP within 192.168.1.10 – 192.168.1.99

      In the digital twin:

      • Connection type: "Network", enter model and IP
      • Slave ID = 1, Port = 502

      Device-side configuration steps required. Password may be needed.

      • Communication → MODBUS → Activate Port 502
      • Monitoring → Parameters → Ext. Controls:
        • Activate normalized active power limitation = 1
        • Set either Activate fixed power factor control (cos phi) or Activation of normalized reactive power limitation (Q/Pnom) to 1 depending on grid operator’s requirements.
