Actual/target ratio in PV yield monitoring

Background to the calculation of the target yield: In our platform, the calculation of the target yield is based on specific annual yields and a monthly distribution expressed as a percentage. These monthly target values are determined from average data over several years and serve as a reliable basis for mapping the expected yields of a PV system over longer periods of time (e.g. monthly or annually).

Why there are deviations on a daily basis: Although the monthly target values provide a good estimate of the expected yield, they can lead to deviations on a daily basis. There are several reasons for this:

  1. Day-dependent weather conditions: PV facilities react strongly to the weather conditions of a single day. On particularly sunny days, for example, the actual yield may be significantly higher than the calculated target yield. Conversely, days with less sunshine can result in the actual value being far below the target value.

  2. Monthly target distribution: As the monthly target values are based on average values, they are distributed over the individual days of the month. This means that the daily values do not always correspond exactly to the actual conditions. The actual/target ratio can therefore exceed or fall below 100 % on individual days.

How the behavior balances out over the longer term: It is important to note that these deviations are normal on a daily basis and balance out over the entire month. Over the course of a month or a year, the target/actual calculation provides a realistic picture of facility operation. It is therefore not a cause for concern if the ratio is above 100 % or below on some days.

Summary (FAQ):

  1. Why is the actual value sometimes over 100 %?

    • This usually happens on particularly sunny days when the actual solar radiation is higher than the monthly average.
  2. What does it mean if the actual/target ratio is well below 100 %?

    • On days with less sunshine or unfavorable weather conditions, the actual value may be below the target value. This usually balances out over the course of the month.
